At the Fan Expo Canada: Limited Edition Q & R, hosted by John K. Kirk De Den of Geek, Charles Martinet responded to many fans questions about how he became the emblematic voice of the Nintendo games and his plans on a possible retirement. Fortunately, Charles Martinet was quick to reassure fans.
I want to express Mario until I get dead, said Charles Martinet to the fans. However, he was also trying to add this: If one day I think I m not able to do it anymore, I will say to Nintendo to look for someone else.
Yet it s a reassuring new for fans, especially facing the new Mario animation film in preparation, with Chris Pratt in the role of Mario s voice. We had Charles Martinet as Mario s voice for the last thirty years after all. Not only did he expressed the emblematic Mario of the Mario Games, but he also expressed Luigi, Waluigi, Wario, among others in the franchise. Many fans first heard the emblematic voice in Mario 64, and since then he expressed Mario in more than a hundred titles.
How Charles Martinet became the emblematic voice is a fun story. Apparently, a friend asked him to fail a hearing in Las Vegas . Martinet entered while the casting directors prepared things and asked him if he could read the script. The directors have accepted, giving him the invitation You are an Italian plumber of Brooklyn named Mario for a video play company named Nintendo. Naturally, Martinet did not know much about video games at the time, and while he originally planned an Italian-American hoarse voice, he rather decided to opt for the much more joyful and young version of a Brooklyn accent. Directed when he heard action instead of talking about the script, he started enumerating pizzas, pasta and all Italian dishes he could name until the gang is exhausted. While at the start, Charles thought he bombed the hearing, the main designer of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, knew they had found their Mario. This led Martinet to be reminded, and the rest belongs to the story.
Yet some people wondered if Charles believed that there would be someone able to assume the role once he was gone. And Martinet had an interesting answer.
... I hope there will always be Mario after my departure. Anyway, there are more than 5 million audio files from me expressing Mario. I go to the studio and recorded 45 taken from all the sounds I can think, so I m not going anywhere for a long time!
